map-presidential election-1872
Georgia: The 4,000 popular votes given to the Straight Out Democrats who refused Greeley's atypical candidacy accepted by their party, were estimated by county, hence some possible cases of majority for this dissenting ticket, which therefore do not appear in any source.

*Louisiana: Democrats and Republicans alike claim victory; the United States Congress nullifies all results; at the time, the almanacs presented both sets of results; today, Republican statistics are preferred; but this gives no vote to the Democrats in two counties where they have always obtained good results, so we averaged the two sets of figures (moreover often very close to each other) to make the map in that state as well as to establish the national statistics of popular votes.

In Virginia, for reasons of clarity and overall coherence, the Independent Cities are combined with the counties from which they arise.
