The Free Soil Party would not officially compete in the Southern States, but in North Carolina as in California some popular votes,
probably handwritten, fell on it in the few counties duly mapped above.
In Virginia, for reasons of clarity and overall coherence, the Independent Cities are combined with the counties from which they arise.
